Overview
CATD is the educational arm of Fiji’s Ministry of iTaukei Affairs and operates as a registered charitable trust and registered higher education institution. Its origins date to the 1980s, when it was established by the German government through the Hans-Siedel Foundation. Initially based in Walu Bay, Suva, it later moved to Nadave in Bau, Tailevu; the institution was handed over to the Fiji Government in 1985. Its core mission is to train rural technicians and support iTaukei communities across Fiji’s 14 provinces and Rotuma. Students are nominated through provincial councils with Roko Tui approval. The published course model lasts one academic year: an initial semester of theory and practical workshops followed by a mandatory 480-hour industrial attachment. Students then return to sit the Fiji National University Trade Test Class 3 Certificate. Course fees include accommodation, meals, equipment and student activities. New dormitory and classroom facilities inaugurated on 25 September 2025 include three furnished classrooms and accommodation for over 140 students.
